Abstract

ABSTRACT This research evaluates the impact of the dredging entrance channel project on the performance of the Port of Dar es Salaam, emphasizing the aspects of dredging frequency, depth, and width. Utilizing a mixed-methods framework, the study combines both quantitative and qualitative data to thoroughly examine the connection between dredging activities and port performance. The study uses interview, questionaires and documentary review as data collection methodology and a total of 52 participants, including port officials, engineers, and maritime specialists, were surveyed to assess how dredging influences critical operational indicators such as vessel accessibility, safety, congestion, and cargo handling efficiency. The results reveal a strong agreement among respondents regarding the beneficial effects of dredging on various dimensions of port performance. Statistical evaluations indicate significant correlations between dredging activities and enhancements in port accessibility, reductions in vessel delays, improvements in safety, and increases in operational efficiency. The data presents high mean values, low standard deviations, elevated t-values, and highly significant p-values <0.05, confirming the statistical significance of these relationships. Additionally, the study underscores the vital importance of dredging depth in accommodating larger vessels and minimizing delays, with mean scores ranging from 4.00 to 4.15 and similarly significant t-values (15.10–18.30). Moreover, dredging width is identified as a crucial element in alleviating congestion, enhancing vessel safety, and increasing operational flexibility. The findings suggest that widening entrance channels yields substantial advantages for port performance, as indicated by mean scores of 3.96–4.18 and significant t-values (10.65–12.35). These outcomes align with previous studies, emphasizing the necessity of regular and appropriately measured dredging operations to maintain efficient port functions and bolster competitiveness.
